PRESS RELEASE
Prince Albert Catholic Schools Celebrates First Nation, Metis, and Inuit Students Today!
October 6, 2020 Prince Albert – Prince Albert Catholic Schools celebrates our First Nation, Metis, Inuit students today! The graduation rates for First Nation, Métis and Inuit for École St. Mary School students outperform the provincial results.
Former Premier Brad Wall and the Government of Saskatchewan’s Plan for Growth (page 39) had set a target to include:
“Recognizing that the first step in increasing employment of First Nations and Métis people in Saskatchewan is improving education outcomes, the Government of Saskatchewan will reduce the Grade 12 graduation disparity between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students in the K-12 system by 50 per cent by 2020.”
Our school division staff, along with the staff at École St. Mary, began the process of looking for ways we could support our First Nation, Métis and Inuit students to reach graduation.
Annually since 2008, École St. Mary School has continued the upward trend of graduating more First Nation, Métis and Inuit students year over year. This year’s rate of First Nation, Metis and Inuit graduates not only outperforms the three-year graduation rate in 2008 by 20% in our school division, it outperforms the provincial average by 36% in 2008. The First Nation, Métis, Inuit graduation rates for students graduating after three years is 68% and after five years is 81%.
School Board Chair Suzanne Stubbs explains “This story is a story of persistence and dedication. We want to celebrate our First Nation, Métis and Inuit students, families and staff!”
In 2008, the province graduated 47% of the First Nation, Métis and Inuit students completing grade 12 in 5 years. The school division at the time graduated 58%. The graduation results of First Nation, Métis and Inuit students completing grade 12 in five years in 2020 is 81% in our school division!
