PRINCE ALBERT – École St. Mary High School Hybrid Learning Highlighted in University of Regina Grad Class. On Tuesday evening, Principal Mark Phaneuf was requested to be a virtual special guest in a University of Regina grad level class focused on blended learning strategies. The beginning of the pandemic marked the need to move to a hybrid learning model for École St. Mary High School. Mark Phaneuf shared the efforts of developing a hybrid learning model that emphasized learning in a pandemic. Mark shared how he and his entire educational team are optimizing instructional strategies to connect with students while remaining focused on teaching and learning curriculum outcomes.
Dr. Alec Couros, University Professor of Information and Communication Technologies; ICT Coordinator and Director, Faculty Based Research Centre at the University of Regina invited Principal Mark Phaneuf to meet with his grad level students. Dr. Couros explained he invited Mark to discuss online and blended learning. Aligned with the Saskatchewan Safe School Plan, École St Mary High School (a urban high-density school) moved to Level 3 at the start of the school year. There is just over 1000 students at École St. Mary High School in both English and French Immersion programs. Students have been provided opportunity to participate in either online courses, in-person hybrid learning environments or both.
“We are impressed with the learning endeavors of both students and staff as we all navigate the unchartered territory of learning in a 21st century pandemic. We cannot measure the technological learning and growth that has occurred. Students and staff are engaged in new technological techniques that are being used in today’s society more than ever.” Director of Education Lorel Trumier emphasized. “We have come a long way since our log house school in 1887 and now we are providing a hybrid learning model to ensure learning continues during a global pandemic,” said Suzanne Stubbs, Board Chair. “We have made history in this province as one of the oldest Catholic school divisions to operate during two global pandemics and we will have many reasons to celebrate the dedication and commitment of our students and staff.”
