October – Mother Mary and Praying the Rosary

October is the month dedicated to our Mother Mary and praying the Rosary. Through her example and prayers, we can grow in our faith in Jesus and in our love of each other.  Saint John Paul II made an excellent point when he said:

“Why should we not all together look to her as our common Mother who prays for the unity of God’s family and who ‘precedes’ us all at the head of the long line of witnesses of faith in the one Lord?”

(St. John Paul II, Redemptoris Mater, 30).

Here are a few things we know about Mother Mary:

  • Her parents were Saints Anne and Joachim.
  • She was born in Jerusalem and lived in Nazareth in Galilee.
  • She was the cousin of Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist.
  • She was engaged to Joseph when the angel Gabriel came to her: “Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you” (Luke 1:28).
  • The Angel announced that she was to be the mother of Jesus, the Mother of God.
  • She had a deep faith in God and said YES to what was asked of her.

During the month of October, we often pray the rosary as a way to express our faith. The rosary is both beautiful and profound.

Let us pray:

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

Amen
